Lysimachus to Samos: the arbitration of the Batinetis boundary dispute

About 283/2 BCE the Diadoch Lysimachus, master of Ionia, answered Samos in a long-running boundary quarrel with Priene over the Batinetis — the strip of mainland opposite the island. Both cities sent envoys; the king's letter opens with a remarkable judicial candour: 'if we had foreseen that you had held this land for so many years, we should not at all have taken up the case; but as it is, we suppose the dispute to have arisen entirely within a recent time.' He then rehearses the rival histories. The Prienians argued their original possession 'from the histories': that after Lygdamis the Kimmerian invaded Ionia the Samians fled to the island, the mainland lay in others' hands for years, and when the Samians returned by force Bias of Priene made peace and the settlers withdrew. The Samians countered with ancestral title, conceding the flight to the island but insisting that a thousand Samians later returned and divided the land into lots. Then the stone breaks — exactly where the verdict stood. Which way Lysimachus decided cannot be recovered: Waddington and Lenschau read the award for Samos, Hicks for Priene. This edition is the pair to the Lysimachus-Priene letter (ed.#9, OGIS 11): the same king writing to both sides of one boundary, a Hellenistic arbitration read from both shores.
