Antiochus III: the cult of Queen Laodice and the chief-priestess Berenike

In spring 204 BCE Antiochus III the Great writes to his satrap Anaximbrotus instituting a state cult of his wife, Queen Laodice III: just as chief-priests of the king are already appointed throughout the empire, chief-priestesses (archiereiai) of the queen are now to be appointed in the same places, wearing golden crowns bearing her image and named in contracts after the priests of the gods and the king; in Anaximbrotus' satrapy the king names Berenike, daughter of Ptolemy son of Lysimachus, a royal kinswoman. A covering note registers the appointment and orders the stele. The female counterpart of the Seleucid ruler-cult, and the corpus's Laodice thread completed (cf. ed. #4, the land sale of Laodice I). From Eriza in Caria; now the Louvre.
