About 242 BCE the island of Cos mounted the first great festival-diplomacy campaign of the Hellenistic world — the model Magnesia would imitate a generation later: having reorganized the games of Asklepios at its famous healing sanctuary, the city sent sacred envoys to kings and cities asking that the Asklepieia be recognized and the Asklepieion be inviolable. The royal answers were cut on the sanctuary's own stones, and three of them stand here, the companion to the reply of Ziaelas of Bithynia (edited separately). The fullest is the letter Herzog assigned to Seleucus II Kallinikos: the envoys, he says, performed the rites and games, then asked inviolability for those who come to the Asklepieia and for the temple itself; the king praises the people for their piety and singles out the ambassador Diogeitos 'because in both word and deed he saw what was best for the city' — the very Diogeitos who had led the embassy to Ziaelas — and grants the asylia, promising future goodwill 'while our affairs remain peaceful' (he was fighting the War of the Brothers). Ptolemy III Euergetes accepts 'both for the god's sake and for the city's' and undertakes to instruct the communities subject to him to hold the temple inviolable within the boundary-stones Cos had set. The third stone, which Herzog reconstructed as a letter of Attalus I, survives only as the line-ends of its right-hand edge — too little even to confirm that it was a royal letter; it is presented here as scraps, with the attribution left as inference.
