Letter of Paullus Fabius Maximus
on the calendar of Asia

The letter of Paullus Fabius Maximus, Roman proconsul of the province of Asia, written in 9 BC, proposing one of the most remarkable acts of the early imperial cult: that the calendar of every Greek city in the province be reformed so that the year begins on the birthday of Augustus — 23 September — the day all magistrates take office. The letter argues the case in soaring religious language — Augustus' birth as the world's rescue, 'the beginning of life' for all — and asks the koinon of Asia to adopt the reform by decree. The koinon's answering decree gave the inscription its fame, calling the birthday of the god the beginning of the 'good tidings' (euangelia) for the world. This reader presents the proconsul's Greek letter, with verbatim text, translation, apparatus and a section-by-section commentary.
