Position in the formula dossier
The single longest SC text in the dossier corpus (14,941 characters of normalised Latin). Carries 5 instances of placere + scribendo adfuerunt + gratias agere (the Tiberian gratiarum-actio opening, an Imperial-era SC innovation Sherk 1970 documents) + recte atque ordine (the endorsement formula Raggi & Buongiorno 2020 analyse). Its sister copies show the SC's provincial circulation in bronze — the same publication mechanism the SC de Bacchanalibus 206 years earlier (case study #1) commanded.

If the SC de Bacchanalibus (case study #1) is the canonical Republican SC, the SC de Pisone Patre is the canonical Tiberian SC — the Imperial-era counterpart that lets the dossier read the genre across 206 years. Its discovery in 1988 was a landmark of late-twentieth-century epigraphy: until then, the trial of Piso for the death of Germanicus was known almost exclusively through Tacitus (Annales 3.7–18). The SCpP gives us the verdict in its own voice, in the senatorial chancery prose Tacitus selectively redacted. Lebek 1999 documents in extraordinary detail how Tacitus's narrative compresses, omits, and reorganises the SC's material — making the SCpP-vs-Tacitus comparison a textbook case for how literary historiography redacts documentary epigraphy. For the dossier's purposes, the SCpP's particular value is that it is intact, complete, dated to the day, and uses every major Imperial-era SC formula in one document.

Densely prosopographic, partly intact, substantially restored. Six provincial copies preserve 170 named persons (senators by tribe + filiation, witnesses to the drafting, the Pisones, Germanicus, Tiberius), 38 institutional markers, and the sanction-concept vocabulary of the Tiberian SC. The text is one of the dossier's most content-dense (HT4) but also substantially damaged across the six copies (ET3) and needs reconciliation-restoration to read (RT4). This is the heart of the Imperial-era SC. The transition formula de iis rebus ita censuerunt (Sherk 1970 p. 60, fully spelt out in the Bacchanalibus's de ea re ita censuerunt) is now abbreviated to d.i.r.i.c. on the bronze. The decretum opens not with the substantive ruling but with a formal gratiarum-actio — the Senate gives thanks first to the immortal gods, then to Tiberius. Lebek 1999 documents this as a Tiberian-era innovation; it does not appear in the Bacchanalibus, but becomes a fixture of the Imperial SC genre and is preserved verbatim in Tacitus's compressed account (Annales 3.18). 过渡公式 de iis rebus ita censuerunt (Sherk 1970 p. 60, 在 Bacchanalibus 中完整拼写为 de ea re ita censuerunt) 在青铜板上简写为 d.i.r.i.c.

3. Slot-by-slot decomposition (Sherk's scheme + Imperial-era modifications)3.

Sherk 1970 p. 60 lists six diagnostic Imperial-era modifications to the Republican scheme: (1) convening magistrate's name omitted, (2) transition formula extended to quid de ea re fieri placeret, de ea re ita censuerunt, (3) motives migrate into the decretum proper, (4) placere becomes common, (5) attendance count appears at the end, (6) named proposer from Hadrian onward. The SCpP exhibits 5 of the 6 (the proposer is still unnamed in 20 CE — Mommsen's rule). Sherk's table rendered against the SCpP: Sherk 1970 p.

What this table makes plain: the SC genre has expanded substantially since 186 BCE, but the expansion is additive, not transformative. Every Republican slot is still present (the witness list, the relatio, the closing approval, the publication clause); five new slot-types have been added (the gratiarum-actio opening, the named addressee, the multi-defendant decretum sequence, the tiered publication clause, the closing dating notice). The Republican four-part scheme is still the structural backbone Sherk identifies; the Tiberian SC has simply built out an additional storey on top. The pedagogical hypothesis the dossier asks students to test (in INSTRUCTOR_WK13.md Exercise 6) — that SC formulae are stable across 350 years — is, in this case study, exactly visible: scribendo adfuerunt, de [ea/iis] re[bus] ita censuerunt, and censuere/placere all appear here as they appeared in Bacchanalibus, just within an expanded outer frame.

4. English translation (key passages)4.

Lines 1–7 (prescript). On the 4th day before the Ides of December [= 10 December], in the Palatine, in the portico beside the temple of Apollo. For the redaction there were present: Marcus Valerius son of Marcus, of the Lemonia tribe, Messallinus; Caius Ateius son of Lucius, of the Aniensis tribe, Capito; Sextus Pompeius son of Sextus, of the Arnensis tribe; Marcus Pompeius son of Marcus, of the Teretina tribe, Priscus; Caius Arrenus son of Caius, of the Galeria tribe, Gallus; Lucius Nonius son of Lucius, of the Pomptina tribe, Asprenas, quaestor; Marcus Vinicius son of Publius, of the Poblilia tribe, quaestor ...

Lines 5–10 (relatio). Inasmuch as Tiberius Caesar Augustus, son of the divine Augustus, pontifex maximus, holding the tribunician power for the 22nd time, consul for the third time and designated for the fourth, brought before the Senate: what verdict shall be passed on the case of Cn. Piso the elder, and whether it appears that he rightly took his own life; and what verdict on the case of Marcus Piso, his son, to which relation Tiberius added that this body should be mindful of his prayers on behalf of the youth; and what verdict on the case of Plancina, on whose behalf Tiberius had earlier pleaded and stated his reasons; and what verdict on Visellius Karus and Sempronius Bassus, the companions of Cn. Piso the elder.

Lines 10–22 (transition + gratiarum-actio opening). The Senate decreed on these matters as follows: the Senate and the Roman People give thanks above all to the immortal gods that they did not suffer the tranquillity of the present state of the Republic — than which a better could not be wished — and the benefit which it is our fortune to enjoy through our princeps to be disturbed by the criminal designs of Cn. Piso the elder; and then [give thanks] to Tiberius Caesar Augustus, our princeps, because he has given the Senate the opportunity to investigate all matters necessary for ascertaining the truth — whose fairness and patience the Senate admires also on this account, that although Cn. Piso the elder's crimes are absolutely manifest and he himself has taken his own life, [Tiberius] nevertheless wished his case to be investigated and his sons to be summoned and encouraged to defend their father's case, so that he wished even him who was not yet of senatorial rank [M. Piso] to be brought into the Senate for that purpose.

Lines 165–173 (publication clause). [The Senate decrees] that this SC, engraved on bronze, be posted in the most frequented place at Rome, also in the chief city of each province, and in the winter quarters of each legion in the principia near the standards.

Lines 173–174 (closing dating notice, Tiberius's manu mea). This SC, which was made on the 4th day before the Ides of December [= 10 December].

5. Historical context — the trial of Cn. Piso, 17–20 CE5.

Germanicus, Tiberius's adopted son, died at Antioch on 10 October 19 CE. The Roman world had widely (and credibly) suspected Cn. Calpurnius Piso, governor of Syria, of having poisoned him. Piso returned to Rome in late 19 CE to face prosecution before the Senate, sitting as a high court under Tiberius's chairmanship. The trial extended from December 19 into 20 CE; on or near 8 December 20, Piso took his own life rather than await the verdict. The SCpP — passed on 10 December 20 — is the Senate's formal disposition of the case after Piso's death, condemning him posthumously while sparing the other defendants (Piso's son M. Piso, his wife Plancina at Augusta's intercession, his comites Visellius Karus and Sempronius Bassus). Sempronius Bassus).

The SC orders posted in bronze across Rome, in the chief city of every province, and at every legionary signum-shrine across the empire. Until 1988, no copy was known; Tacitus's Annales 3.7–18 was the principal source. The 1988–1989 finds in Hispania Baetica (one full copy from El Nido del Grajo + several fragments from neighbouring sites) gave the SC back to us almost intact. Each of the ten or so legions stationed in 20 CE had its own bronze copy; the multiple Baetican finds reflect the SC's circulation through that province's network of administrative centres.

6. Scholarship synthesis6.

Lebek 1999 — the SCpP and Tacitus, in counterpoint

Lebek 1999, ZPE 128, pp. 183–184. Excerpted in dossier_workspace/excerpts_latin_sc.md §5.3.

Lebek's article is the central scholarly treatment of the SCpP's diachronic relationship with Tacitus. He documents in extraordinary detail (1) how the SC's date (10 December 20) contradicts the impression Tacitus gives of a much earlier trial conclusion; (2) how Tacitus, in his condensed Annales 3.18 paraphrase, preserves the SC's gratiarum-actio opening verbatim (the only direct quotation from the SC that survives in his account); (3) how the SC's scribendo adfuerunt witness list names Messallinus — the consul of 3 BCE — first, which reveals that Messallinus, a senior consularis, controlled the redaction of his own sententia (Mommsen's rule: SCs never name the proposer of a motion, only the witnesses to the redaction). The SCpP is the dossier's strongest evidence for the gap between documentary-epigraphic record and literary-historiographical narrative — exactly the question Roueché 2022 raises about model-vs-historian readings in INSTRUCTOR_WK14.md.

Eck, Caballos & Fernández 1996 — the editio princeps

The 1996 monograph (W. Eck, A. Caballos, F. Fernández, Das senatus consultum de Cn. Pisone patre, Vestigia 48, Munich) is the foundational edition: text, apparatus criticus, commentary, photographic plates of all the surviving bronze fragments. Eck's commentary establishes the SC's lineation (176 lines on copy A), its prosopography (every named senator in the scribendo adfuerunt list identified), its diplomatic principles, and the relationship between the multiple bronze copies discovered in Baetica. The dossier's general knowledge folder holds this volume; it is image-only and pending OCR (per html_dossier_plan.md §2.4 / §6.2). Cooley 2023 supersedes its translation but not its diplomatic apparatus. 1996 年专著 (W. Eck, A. Caballos, F. Fernández, Das senatus consultum de Cn.

Cooley 2023 — the new translation and commentary

Cooley's 2023 monograph, The Senatus Consultum de Cn. Pisone Patre, is the most recent full-scale English commentary. It supplements Eck/Caballos/Fernández with (a) a new translation accessible to non-specialist readers, (b) thorough discussion of the SC's preservation context in Baetica (including the new bronze fragments published since 1996), (c) extended consideration of the political role of Augusta (Livia) in the Plancina acquittal. The dossier's general knowledge folder holds this volume in clean-text form (see 2023 cooley the senatus consultum de cn pisone patre.pdf). For Week 14 / Week 15 classroom use, Cooley 2023 is the canonical English-language entry point. Cooley 2023 专著 The Senatus Consultum de Cn. Sherk 1970 — the Imperial-era six modifications, exemplified here

"An examination of the senatus consulta from the age of Augustus onward shows that a number of changes had been made in the scheme presented above. 1. The name of the magistrate who convened the senate is omitted. 2. The formula of transition is extended to quid de ea re fieri placeret, de ea re ita censuerunt. 3. The motives for passing the decree tend to appear in the decree proper, introduced by cum. 4. Placere or senatui placere becomes common. 5. The number of senators present at the meeting is noted at the end. 6. After Hadrian (or Antoninus Pius) the name of the senator whose sententia was followed in the decree is given." Sherk 1970, pp. 59–60. Excerpted in dossier_workspace/excerpts_latin_sc.md §5.1.

The SCpP exhibits five of Sherk's six diagnostic Imperial-era modifications. Only #6 (named proposer) is absent — the SC is still Tiberian (20 CE), pre-Hadrian (117 CE). This makes the SCpP, in Sherk's framework, the canonical example of the early-Imperial SC: one transitional generation past the Republican baseline, one transitional generation before the High Imperial named-proposer convention.
